Brief thoughts: Forget them

"In spite of everything you've done for them, eventually they will hate you."

~Norman Osborne

For the greater majority of our lives, each of us will continue to disappoint people. Some people just can't be pleased. With that being said, don't continue to waste your talents, energy, and efforts in vain trying to change the unchangeable. It's futile.
Don't live for other's enjoyment; loneliness is a disease that affects every human being at some point in time, but it's temporary. With 7+ billion people in this world, the likelihood of not meeting someone who appreciates who and what you are is impossible. Most of us, including myself, forget this fact. We become consumed with wanting to fit in to society, or change who we are to fit the standards of others. This is a travesty, a desecration to originality and uniqueness.
Of course it's not easy, of course there are days when each of us want to throw in the towel, stare up into the heavens clenching our fists, and scream, I'm done! Imagine for a second if everyone did that, and how different the world would be. The irony is, there would be no differences. The world would be one blurred, dull, redundancy. Sounds fun, eh?
Of course in your response would be, That's not relevant, why consider the impossible? Well, the fact remains is that EVERYONE feels that way, at least at some point, and yet even so, many of those people have got back on their feet, did the best them in spite of everyone else, and became something great. We are all different and special, and each of us has the power to achieve something great, regardless of your current situation or predicament. Focus on you, don't waste your breath with people that challenge you for the sake of challenging you. Battle that temporary loneliness every day, and know that patience is a virtue. Good things happen to those who wait, just be sure not to wait too long, because nothing happens if you sit and do nothing.

The Mix

Sweat trickles down his upper left brow as he stares in the mirror, his black and red Studio Beats Headset draped around his neck. This was the night, his time to shine. He inhaled and exhaled slowly, and then walked out of the restroom. His hands were wet and clammy, and twitched intermittently while he walked down the hall. He felt the Sonic milkshake he had drank hours prior start to churn in his stomach. What if he messed up? So many ways to screw up, and everyone would notice. After all, this wasn't concerto piano where little mistakes went unnoticed. He paused at the door, heard the roaring crowd just beyond it. *Gulp* Ok, breathe in.....breathe out.....breathe in........As he exhaled once more, he stepped through the door onto the stage. The last DJ was just finishing his final set, the crowd going crazy, jumping up and down. He felt his stomach churn again. Wow, he thought, How the hell am I going to follow up after THAT? Before he even knew what was happening, the crowd had broken into applause and cheers, and the DJ walked off the stage, hands held high and triumph. The MC picked up the mic. "Give it up one last time for Oliver Heldens!!!! Once again, the crowd roared, and the DJ disappeared behind the stage. As the crowd's cheers died down, the MC paused momentarily, glancing at the crowd, then back at the the other DJ. "We have something special for you tonight everyone, Performing his very first mix session at EDM Sub zero, hailing all the way from Seattle, Washington, please give it up for DJ SHAKA!!!!!!!" As the crowd roared back to life, the MC motioned to the DJ to step forward. DJ Shaka, staring transfixed at the tens of thousands of people, didn't notice. He wiped the sweat off his brow as the MC walked over and lightly nudged the jittery DJ toward the center stage. The DJ walked like a robot toward the MacBook sitting by the mixers. He slipped in his thumbdrive, and tentatively grabbed the mic from the mic stand. He stared at the crowd for a good 15 seconds, holding the mic. Inhale....exhale...."How are you doing tonight Atlanta?!!!" Once again the crowd erupted. "I may just be a nerd from Seattle, and this may be my first official mix session, but I , and that's exact have some sick stuff for you tonight, so enough chit chat. Let's TURNNN UPP ATLANTA!!!!"  As everyone pumped their fists and cheered, Shaka began his mix. He started with some light cymbal combos, then he added a low synth to carry the cymbals. He noticed people had begun head bobbing in the crowd, lifting their hands, nodding at him. He added a few fx for the buildup, then some classic stereo claps. Almost everyone was moving their bodies now, feeling the beat. The buildup continued, the claps quickening. He added another synth, observing the crowd. So far so good  he thought to himself. As the buildup approached its climax, DJ Shaka broke out into a sweat again. If he didn't hit this drop right, he could blow everything, in front of tens of thousands of people. He walked through the drop one last time in his head, then slowly but confidently adjusted a few things on the soundboard. 3....2......1.......Shaka dropped the bassline, subwoofer blaring, overlapping snyths reverbing around the building, Everyone was on their feet, jumping, head bobbing, yelling, sweating like maniacs as they danced like their life depended on it. Well, that was easier than I thought thought Shaka as he smiled to himself. He cupped one hand around his Studio Beats, stuck his fist in the air, yelling, "Let's GOOO Atlanta!!!

As his 45 minute mix session came to a close, DJ Shaka no longer felt anxious, but ecstatic. He had nailed his debut, and couldn't be happier. I wonder who's gonna follow me up. My mix is going to be hard to beat haha. No sooner had he thought that did the MC say "Now put your hands up for the final mix of the night, the people who all came to see, Dimitri Vegas and Like Mike!!!!!!!!! Umm...what??!!! Just then the duo themselves walked right up to DJ Shaka, hands prepared to fist bump him out of respect. "Mate, what a show, you KILLED it. I'm not sure if we can one up that, but we'll give it our best go won't we Mike? Haha" Stunned, mouth open, DJ Shaka watched as the two megastars walked up to the mixer to get ready. He looked as if he had just seen a ghost. Wow, um....ok then. He grabbed his hoodie and walked out, wearing a grin so large it could be seen a mile away.

Cocoon

Encased in a confined space,

My body immobile,

Beset by my worries, fears, and tears,

Creating the illusion of permanence,

But if only my paralyzed hands could

Reach and see its only paper.

The transparent walls surrounding me,

Reveal the world that awaits,

If only I could claw my way

Out of these unwavering paper confines,

But my mind has convinced me of the

Walls' permanence.

My fingers, buried in the cement layed

By my false pretenses and assumptions,

That cloud my mind with their nebulous

Haze, permeating through my pores like

Oil seeps through tissue paper,

I am my own biggest weakness.

But the cocoon enveloping me

Is not exempt from the coarse hands

Of time. Nothing is permanent, and I

Will squirm and flail until I burst through

The paper walls encasing me,

...into something beautiful.

If you could relive one day...

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to relive one day in your life, in the body you now have? Sorry, that's a stupid question. Of course you have--everyone has. The better question is what day in your life would it be and why?

I'm not quite exactly sure why this spontaneously came to mind. I had been thinking about my generation, the 90's kids. Our generation has lived in 3 different decades, two centuries, and two millenia. The only day I  would really want to relive, assuming I was in my current body, would be the simultaneous turn of the century and the millenium--New Years Eve, 1999.

We have all heard numerous references in line with "Let's party like it's 1999!" both in conversation and in music. Up until now however, I had never really thought about the fact that I was actually there, 5 years young, but there nonetheless. When one is at such a young age he/she doesn't really appreciate what the New Year means, aside from having to date papers with a new number for 365 days.

If only for the sheer spectacle, 4 number changes as opposed to one, the dawn of the 21st century, the new millennium, I would want to relive that day. In modern terms, the party would be LIT, and the after party would be one for the ages (literally). To be with others during this celebration, while the whole world, if only for a few hours, was at ease--it would be nothing short of spectacular, made even better with some free food and ice cold booze. I can't even imagine how much more fun 1999's New Year celebration would be in comparison with any other New Year party of the 21st Century.

A new fixation

It's been quite a while since I last posted a blog. Since that time, I've made it back to the UK and have resumed my studies this term. Today I just participated in my first ever radio show; although I was nervous at first, I feel like I was in my element.

It was rather nice having control over everything, from the content I discussed to the music I played. It took a little while for me to decide what my first show would be focused on. I decided to do my own spin on "Feel Good Friday" and did my own "Feel Good Wednesday". I just played a variety of "feel good songs", from the new running man song to the legendary Santana. Every now and then I would fade the music out to share a few words about the song or artist. I also briefly discussed the upcoming summer Olympics that will  be held in Rio starting in about a week.

In light of it being my first time on air, it was difficult for me to get comfortable at first. As the term progresses I look forward to creating my own comedic radio persona in the hopes of attracting more listeners. Naturally, I will also have to do a little self-advertising, if only for people around campus to even know my show exists.

With that being said, I am very excited moving forward in this. It's a wonderful feeling being able to share your voice and your music with others. My dad had a part-time radio broadcasting job when he was at uni, and some of his weather recordings are still used 20 + years later (or so he claims). Hopefully I inherited some of his deep soothing radio voice  There is no doubt that this will become a new fixation of mine. I have always enjoyed listening to radio, and listening to different talk shows and radio hosts. Each one has his/her own unique style that draws a selective group of daily listeners. I'm confident that in time I will find my own style and start gaining in listening numbers.

Return to the U.S.

With one more exam to go this term, my return to the U.S. is a mere 5 days away. I am excited to be returning after a 6 months absence from American soil.

At the moment, my family is currently residing in Las Vegas, or Sin City, as it were. I have only been there for a couple weeks in January when my family initially moved there. It is a city of grandeur, rampant with casinos, scantily-clad women, and an all-encompassing aroma of cigarettes. I rather enjoyed seeing the city for the first time. With that being said, after speaking with a large handful of people the general consensus is that the timeless city is better for taking a holiday as opposed to actually living there. I would think that the fast paced lifestyle and incessant superficiality takes a toll on a person after a few months. In general, I'd much rather prefer the slower paced, go-with-the-flow pace of life native to Europe.

Las Vegas aside, I have been craving Taco Bell for the past 6 months, and if I can't get any upon my return, there will be blood no doubt. England is severely lacking in Mexican restaurants, good cigars, and sunny weather--all of which can be instantly accessible at my fingertips when I return. Then again, 110 degrees Fahrenheit makes my sour cream skin tingle. Most importantly, I miss the easily accessible gym next to my residence. This term I have been slacking off and these next few weeks back home I am going to exhaust my body, without having to bother with coursework and assignments, and it will be wonderful.

Next stop....Vegas!

My Love

Her smile is a light greater than that of a thousand stars,

It warms the deep, icy caverns of my torn heart,

Her laugh is intoxicating,

I get drunk in love every time my earthly ears are graced

with its heavenly presence.

Her eyes are clairvoyant, haunting,

Cutting through my insides like a diamond saber.

She knows my biggest worries and fears,

And my longing for her love that matches my own,

Kiss for kiss, embrace for embrace.

When I look into her eyes time stops.

The rest of the world ceases to exist,

Like a little child in awe of a shiny coin,

I am entranced.

She is the missing piece in life's puzzle.

Got Caffeine?

Rockstar, Monster, Red bull, AMP, 5 hour energy, coffee--whichever your preference, odds are you drink some form of caffeine on a daily basis. Caffeine is a part of our everyday lives. To some extent one might even say its our human fuel. Over 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed each day--each day! Just think about that for a second. If every cup of coffee costs 3 USD, then that's over 6 billion dollars a day, just spent on coffee (and that's not even including energy drinks and other caffeine based beverages, so the total spent on caffeine daily is even more)! Personally I enjoy all caffeine based beverages, from coffee to Rockstar energy drinks. I drink coffee in all of its many forms and varieties--hot, iced cold, with cream and sugar, or normally just strong and black with nothing added. I'd even go so far as to say that I'm a caffeine addict. Just for fun though, let's consider a world where caffeine (pause for effect) doesn't exist.

How different would everyone be without their daily cup of happiness? How much more cranky and unpleasant would we be? It's rather frightening to think about, to say the least. I expect that we would find some other source of "liquid energy" of sorts to fill the void and complete their daily rituals. On the other hand, anything taken in excessive amounts can be deadly. When one considers the harmful effects of caffeine on the body, perhaps a world without the energizing substance would profit.

Caffeineinformer.com has said that a Mayo clinic partnered study has revealed that men who consume more than 4 8 fl oz. portions of coffee a day have a 21% increase in all-cause mortality. A more common danger of consuming caffeine is that it can raise your blood pressure (this is especially true for people who suffer from hypertension). Furthermore, women who consume 31 to 250 mg of caffeine a day have been 1.5 times more likely to contract fibrocystic breast disease, while women who drink more than 500 mg a day are 2.3 times more likely. It is also commonly known that caffeine in a person's system before bed can imitate the effects of insomnia. Consuming Caffeine can also increase anxiety and depression-like symptoms.

So while the world may suffer in some senses from the absence of caffeine, it is clear that it will conversely benefit. Regardless, much to our delight (or subconsciously our dismay) we live in a world where caffeine exists. It is apart of most of our everyday lives, and it is rather frightening to consider a world without it.

Making an EDM track: the Basics

EDM, or electronic dance music, is a genre of music I really enjoy. Recently I've discovered a mobile app called Music Maker Jam that allows you to use stock sounds and beats to create your own unique track, for virtually any genre of music. It is very addicting and I've taken to it right away.

For those that don't know, most EDM tracks follow a standard sequence. I listen to this genre quite frequently and this mobile app is a great medium to construct decent original  EDM tracks.

First, you want to start off with a simple beat or sound. Play it on a loop a couple times, adding different elements each sequence, drawing the listeners in.

Add different percussive beats, with a unique musical sound as a recurring underlying basis for your track. As the song progresses, you can feel free to edit and experiment with different variations in the sound, to eliminate extraneous redundancies.

The next addition should be something that is commonly referred to as "the drop". The drop is simply where there is a transition where isolated musical sounds are joined together at once with the percussive elements. Genres like Dubstep, trap, EDM, techno, and even some hip hop all feature drops, more than once in the same track. It keeps things fluid and interesting, building up to a wonderful climax that listeners always enjoy.

I can't share my created tracks on here for some reason, but if you're that curious, download the app, create an account or simply link to Facebook: then follow me, Scott Stanley, and listen to my track Tiger Trapt to get an idea of a generic drop. You'll know the drop when you hear it, it's impossible to miss.

These are just the essentials in creating an EDM track. Feel free to experiment in any way you want. It's all about originality. Try simplifying the ending of the track, digressing back to the first opening sequences. At least, that's what many DJs do with their tracks.

If you end up downloading the app and giving me a follow, listen to Attraction and Escape, my two personal self made EDM tracks.

Robot

The absence of emotion,

Coupled with Nothing's bittersweet Sting,

Embrace me.

They wrap their arms around me, with near

Inaudible whispers.

You are one of Us now....

My blank hallowed mind takes their words

With lackadaisical indifference.

I am a 3-Dimensional being, slowly being eroded

by The coarse, calloused hands of Time,

Into a 1-Dimensional Robot.

Views From the 6

Being the music man that I am, I enjoy listening to anything and everything out there (with the only exception being hardcore screamo). Among other things, I thoroughly enjoy rap and hip hop. When Drake's new album, Views From the 6, dropped on April 25 of this year, I had to give it a listen.

By itself, I would give his new album a 7. He has some really good tracks that feature fresh bars only Drizzy can produce. The more I listen to it the more I appreciate his lines and original mixes. My personal favourites from his new album are 9, Grammy, and Controlla (which is probably the most popular single on the album).

Now, when you compare it to his counterparts: YG, Kcamp, and Kanye West, all of whom released a new album of their own this year, there is no comparison. Views gets a solid 10/10 in this no-contest. People want tracks they can feel, get into, and sing along with. No other new album gives a listener this like Drake's new album. I am actually a fan of YG, and I was pretty disappointed with his new album. A lot of his tracks are just reminiscent of his old hits, and frankly, just doesn't cut it this time. People want new, fresh beats with fresh sounds, and Views does this beautifully. With that being said, it is IMPERATIVE to include tracks that can be compared to an artist's older stuff. After all, its the older stuff that brought you up to where you stand today. In spite of that fact, it is a 50/50 shot to put only new, different stuff in your album in the hopes that you start a new trend or different kind of feel in the hip hop industry.

Take J. Cole's new mixtape that released this year. J. Cole is my favourite hip hop artist. I was very disappointed in his new album. It seems he just got the short end of the stick with this one. He took that 50/50 shot and failed miserably. It's clearly evident he is just trying to hard to produce new, trendy tracks, that sound nothing like J. Cole's traditional stuff. I can't name even one track that I really enjoy listening to from his new album, and it is very sad.

I regress though.

Drake's new album is another great success to add to his already impressive career in the hip hop world. I highly recommend giving it a listen if you enjoy that sort of music.

Broken

My heart, reduced to shreds like wet paper.

My hands, calloused and scarred from my vain efforts.

My eyes, turned stone cold from the icy reality besetting me.

My legs....

I can't feel my legs.

My skin, a living organ one with the earthy ground,

Trampled upon, bruised senselessly, without

question or remorse.

Warm, red blood, oozing out of every orifice of

my body, over the dried blood already scabbing.

Blood, filled with my pain, weaknesses, flaws...

Regrets.

And yet Broken I stand, and Broken I will heal.

Superpowers

If you could have one superpower what would it be?

For me there is not a second's thought required. I would want the power of teleportation, to be able to envision a place I have once been, or can see on a computer screen or paper, and teleport there simply by thinking about it.

Jumper is one of my favourite movies. It focuses on a "Jumper", or teleporter, who is on the run from an organisation determined to vanish people who "don't deserve power that should only belong to the gods". The protagonist shares the same abilities as mentioned previously and also possesses the ability to teleport people and objects of great magnitude with him, simply by touch; I encourage anyone who hasn't already seen the film to check it out. It really made the idea of teleportation that much more cool and fascinating to me.

To be able to be present at will, at any location that can be seen or imagined, is extraordinary to say the least, and far more fun to me than flying or reading minds, as most commonly mentioned by people who would want powers.

Scientists have already managed to teleport a photon (a microscopic particle of light) across a distance in excess of 20 kilometres. Take a quick look at the link below:

I am keeping my fingers crossed that divine intervention will intercede and make human teleportation a reality.

What about you? Comment the superpower you would wish to have and why :)

Dream Destination

Chances are we've all been asked this question or something somewhat like it: If given the opportunity and the financial resources needed, where in the world would you travel to and why?

This question is a good one to ask when getting to know a person because it can tell a lot about him/her. For me, my dream paradise is in isolation from the rest of the world, just me and my wife (maybe kids eventually). I really want to live in a chalet in the Swiss alps, close to mother nature. I want to smell the cool fresh air, look at the gorgeous mountain peaks silhouetted against a amber coloured sunset--No politics, no corrupt government, no society present to sway you one way or the other, no external force of any kind save for the gorgeous scenery and peaceful atmosphere.

Where would you go? Feel free to comment below :)

My generation

I was born Novemeber 27, 1994. I am a '90s baby. I do enjoy the stuff my generation does. With that being said, I think I would have been better fitting with the generation from the roaring '20s.

I resonate with music of that generation specifically. While I have eclectic music tastes,  I've always had a soft spot in my heart for the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como, Harry Belafonte, Sammy Davis Jr., and Chet Baker. When it comes to entertainment however, no one outshines Ol' Blue Eyes (Sinatra).

I love singing his stuff when I find myself bored, alone, or in the shower. I can't give a suitable explanation for why I enjoy his music so much, I only know that I wish I could have lived when he did, to see him in his prime, at a live show.

The music of my generation has taken a turn for the worse, in my honest opinion. Strictly referring to the entertainment aspect of it, there is no comparison between today's era of music and the music 90 years ago. Lyrics today are  rampant with drugs, sex, money, and delusions of grandeur. While to an extent I do enjoy this music (much more for its instrumental bits and nice rhythmic beats than the words), whenever I want to hear music that soothes me, puts me at ease, and pulls at my heartstrings, I tune into the past, enjoying some Chopin, some Rachmaninoff, or Frank Sinatra.

At some point in my life I want to compose a piece of music for ever genre known to man: my passion for music and its role it plays in our lives is one of the few things I pride myself in, and I am thankful that the Lord has gifted me with an objective mind and open ears.

The Man

The man swings open the glass door with one fluid motion and steps inside, glancing around the room. For a brief, virtually imperceptible period of time, the whole rooms seems to freeze in place, the man's presence encapsulating the entire attention of the shop. Had it been any other place, the man's spot-on bad boy image, from his worn, black steel-toed boots to his frayed leather jacket, shoulder length silky black hair and 5 o'clock stubble, people might have been frightened, to say the least--but this was Vegas. No one questioned anyone's appearance in Sin City.
After spanning his coal-coloured eyes across the room, the man ran his calloused right hand through his black hair and slowly made his way over the counter. One of the baristas working behind the counter, a young pretty brunette of about 17 was startled when her eyes suddenly met his. She blushed beet red, smiled at him and then quickly went back to frothing the cappucino she had been working on.
The man made his way to the counter, which, with his long bulging legs and 6'5 frame, took him about two steps. He walked behind the sole person in line, a rather short, balding man of about 43, who took an instinctual, unsubtle step forward. The man paid him no mind, gazing at the menu behind the counter, one muscly arm clutched around his black tinted biker's helmet, his right hand scratching at his stubbly chin, deep in thought. "Venti Mocha Cappucino for Stewart?!" the brunnette called out from behind the register. The balding man quickly paid, grabbed his drink, and made his way rather quickly out the door, glancing timidly back at in the man's general direction, shaking his head indistinctly, and then subsequently hurrying away. The man remained stationary, still gazing at the selections, shaking his head, his right hand still scratching at his chin. The brunette stood their patiently, opened her mouth to speak, closed it again, opened it once more and mumbled, "Next please". The man jolted out of his trance, embarrassed, stepping quickly up to the counter, not hiding his perfect white teeth as he smiled shyly, glancing at the brunette and then quickly at the ground, now scratching his head. "Hey" he said softly. The barista smiled shyly, blushing. "That's quite alright. What would you like?" She was briefly taken aback by how soothing, how inviting his voice was, how warm his smile was, directly juxtaposing his rough biker look. She tried looking away but her eyes remain fixed on his, paying close attention to the man's every movement, her lips slightly parted. "Umm..hmmm... you see, I don't really come to coffee shops often, ermmm..." She giggled, covering her mouth, her eyes still glued to him. He chuckled as well, clearly out of his comfort zone. "Umm..what's your strongest thing? I've been riding now for about 3 hours, been making my way to Nashville. I really just need something dark and strong to fuel me up." The brunette averted her gaze from the man's face, staring at his bulging pectorals, then at his massive arms, thinking to herself, 'Yes, I bet you would like something dark and strong,' giggling at her own girlish fantasies. "A double Macchiato normally has 2 shots of espresso, but I'll add an extra couple just for you because it seems like you could really use it. The man flashed his pearly whites again, running his right hand through his black mane once again, chuckling in relief. "Thank you, Jenna, that sounds wonderful." The girl was briefly started, quickly looking down at her own nametag which read "J-E-N-N-A", seeming to forget her own name for a brief moment. "That...that'll be 4.95 sir", she mumbles, her face red. The man takes out his wallet from his jacket pocket and hands her a 10. He hands it to her, smiling warmly. "Keep the change for yourself, Jenna. You're working hard and doing a fine job." Completely taken aback, she reaches for it slowly. "Wait...are you sure?" she mutters softly. Grinning back at her he says, "Absolutely". She cups her hands over eyes, trying in vain to hide her delighted surprise. "Thank you sooo much! I'll have the coffee ready for you in a couple minutes". She hurries over to another barista, a tall lanky blonde girl of about 19, speaking quickly to her, giggling. She points over at the man, pointing to the 10 in her hand. The blonde giggles with her, trying to hide her jealousy. The man walks over to the confectionary section, now eyeing the pastries, his left arm still clutching his helmet as he scratches his scruffy chin with his right hand. "Double Macchiato!" the brunette chirps happily the blonde now closer to her, pretending to be working at something else, but clearly just their to gaze upon this mysterious masculine specimen. The man walks up,taking the coffee from the girls outstretched hand, his index finger just touching hers. "Thank you so much, Jenna. Have a wonderful day." Gasping quietly, she rushes off somewhere else, covering her mouth, trying to hold back more unnecessary giggles.
The man makes his way to the exit and starts putting his helmet on, but suddenly stops. He spots a young woman sipping on a latte, her long black hair dangling over the book she has open, The Tempest, her eyes glued to its pages. The man hesitates, looks out the window at his jet black Ducati, then down at his analog wrist watch that barely fits around his large, veiny wrist. He cautiously makes his way over to the woman. *Coughs* towards the vacant seat next to her. "Is..umm...that seat taken?" He says, staring at the ground, blushing. The woman jumps from her book, almost dropping her latte, startled. "Umm....erm..." She gazes at the mans protruding chest, then slowly up into his eyes of coal. "No, not at all." She smiles up at him, flashing her own pearly whites. The mans return the warm smile with one of his own and takes the seat adjacent to her. People sitting about the coffee shop began whispering to her, exchanging glances with each other, motioning to the man and woman. The two baristas, now with no customers, are huddled over the counter, heads resting on their hands, the young girls both staring transfixed at the man now talking to the woman in the corner. The dialogue between the man and the woman is inaudible, but you see the man point is finger at the cover of the woman's book, smiling. The woman nods quickly, smiling, easily matching the man's strange enthusiasm for a book so old yet timeless. They talk for what seems like hours, laughing now and again, neither one breaking each other's gaze or warm smile. The coffee shop has been emptying out slowly, now with only an elderly couple in the back, reading the day's newspaper, oblivious to their surroundings. The man then takes out his phone, looking over at the setting sun and back to his watch. He says something, hands the woman his phone. She grins widely and nods, taking out her own phone, handing it to him. He takes back his phone, staring at the screen---"Stacy". He thanks the woman multiple times, her shrugging and smiling back at him, staring deep into his eyes. He gets up, clutches her delicate left hand softly in his two strong hands, thanking her once more. The woman stares down at his two hands holding her own, her lips parted, her blushing face impossible to miss through her porcelain skin. The man then gets up, puts on his helmet, thanks the two baristas and staff once more while disposing of his empty coffee cup. He waves to the young woman as he exits the shop, making his way over to his bike, The biker starts up his machine, the engine roaring to life. After revving the engine a couple times, the biker speeds off into the distance, the two baristas and the young woman both staring longingly after him. As the two baristas then reluctantly start adding up tips and wiping down the coffee counters, the young woman stares at her own phone. On the contact page there is no name, only a phone number and a quote. She gasps, clutching her mouth, looking quickly back out of the window after the man, who has since disappeared into the sunset.

Smiling, she slowly collects her things, giggling intermittently. Still staring transfixed at her phone screen, she thanks the staff kindly and walks out the glass door.

Running in Place

My arms pumping, lungs heaving,

Feet pounding the ground,

Trying to escape my worries and

Fears.

But I'm stuck in place, merely

Running in place, with nothing

but save for my tears.

My heart on overdrive,

Red hot blood coursing through

My veins. My body is preparing to

Jolt forward.

But like a stallion being restrained

By its reigns,

My attempts are in vain.

I falter repeatedly,

Like a broken vinyl whose

Soothing notes can no longer be

Enjoyed,

I've become one with this corrupt

Place.

I am the south end of the magnet,

Always being forced back to my

Point of origin.

Chaos...

Spontaneous Sequels

Sometimes the movie industry likes to surprise us with a spontaneous follow up film--after a hardly brief hiatus. However, I would say the general consensus is that a long break can be well suited for a one or two film story.

Let's take a look at the award winning Toy Story trilogy. The first film first moved to the big screens in 1994, the year I was born l. Obviously the movie was a major success so it's only appropriate that people expected a sequel to follow--I'm sure no one anticipated they'd be waiting a near decade until there hopes were affirmed. Toy Story 2, which aired in 2001, was another big success, delivering everything the first film did and (debatably) then some. The final instalment wasn't released until a a decade and a year had passed. Toy Story 3 caught the majority of the world by surprise. Not nearly as many believed that Pixar would attempt another chapter to the beloved Toy Story series. Just a few quick looks at past series will tell you why (Rocky 1,2,3,4,5, Rocky Balboa, and In 2016, Creed. Or take for a better example,  the Star Wars prequels, aka episodes 1,2,3) More recently was the Jason Bourne film, Bourne Legacy. I am a huge fan of the Bourne movies and books. Matt Damon, as Jason Bourne himself, is quintessential for a Bourne film. To even attempt a fourth instalment without him is simply money down the drain if you ask a film buff like me.

That being said, when I heard a fifth movie was confirmed, with Matt Damon back as Bourne....I admit, I giggled like a little girl. And Bourne 5 is only one of several anticipated sequels that are to be released soon. Viewers also have films like Finding Dory, Bad Boys 3, Fast 8, and even the award winning series Prison break will be coming out with a new season this year--7 years after its last one finished.

Sometimes the best thing to do when planning  a successful hit sequel is taking a few good years to work on it, Being too hasty, as clearly observed in past occasions, can be a recipe for disaster.

As a little aside, I am very upset that my favourite movie never released a sequel: the Iron Giant 2. While the ending did give the film closure, if only because I liked it so much, I would very much enjoy seeing a modern day sequel, or even a new remake with real people. But discussing my favourite movie is another blog post. I encourage any person of any age to watch the Iron Giant if you have not already. It is a fantastic film.

Driftwood

I move not of my own volition

or Consciousness.

The current that carries me along is apathetic of

my Presence.

My body and mind coexist without being

aware of each other.

My reality is wedded to my solipsist mind, my world

existing in thought alone.

So I drift, like a meaningless substance devoid

of Life.

My mind once belonged to me....

Noise

The absence of my noise bombards your deaf ears,

The entire essence of my being trembles with soundless cries and shouts,

How foolish am I to persist...

Your peircing eyes cut through my heart like an ice-tipped sword.

Your eyes.

They are covered by dirty, misconstrued lenses that you refuse to take off, if only to save face.

But your ears. They function like normal, and yet...you've become deaf to my words,

Deaf to my vain attempts to reel you in like an exotic fish of the sea.

But I am the bait that no can longer attract your presence.

My hook is dull and jaded.

The refuge I have sustained for you for so long is insufficient.

I rest lifeless upon my worn, rusty hook, in the abyss left in your wake.

The I can feel the ice-tipped sword  penetrating the deepest realms of my soul.

But I am now merely

The background noise

in your life's song.

The Power of Labels

I find it curious and amusing that a product's quality tends to be overlooked if it has a trendy brand name or logo. Everywhere you turn big names like Dre's Beats, Mac, Ralph Polo Lauren, Michael Kors, Dolce & Gabbana bombard billboards and shop corners. Odds are you have purchases more than one of their products or from brands of similar popularity. Most often you might just assume since the thing cost you an arm and a leg that the quality is paralleled. From personal experience and observation I can say confidently that this is not always the case.

First let's discuss what gives the Logo's inherent value. The first step, obviously, is advertising. Take Dr. Dre for instance, or Michael Jordan. Both are very weathy; Dre is worth approximately 830 million dollars, MJ is worth nearly 10 figures. They have a deep pocket to put up some deep and far reaching adverts. An appealing, trendy advert places the product on a proverbial pedestal, makes it look desirable to the public.

In addition to adverts, an original and eye-catching design can be just as effective in distinguishing desirable products from lesser ones. Take for instance, the Beats Pill. The Pill was revolutionary, transforming portable audio into an aesthetically pleasing and profitable item in the electronics department. The sleek design, overhyped logo, and easily accessible size made the pill an instant trend. Note that I haven't even mentioned what the device actually sounds like when in use, or the quality of sound it provides. In spite of that, the pill was desired, popular, introducing new standards to the world or portable audio.

I have experimented with several portable audio systems and I will not hesitate to admit that the pill is a premium product. It does produce quality sound. Granted, it may not be the "best bang for the buck", if you catch my drift.

I own a small portable speaker from Altec Lansing (What the hell is that?) Mini H2o. Odds are you have probably never heard of this brand before. Admittedly, before I saw it on display at a local Target, I hadn't either. It is rather rather small, fitting nicely into the palm of your hand, complete with a cute little carabiner you can clip to something if circumstances permit. The speaker is also waterproof, floats on water, and can be tossed and chucked with little to no damage. It has a 6 hour battery life, like its Pill equivalent. It costs only 40 USD, which sounds questionable when considering the Pill costs at its cheapest in the 75-120 USD range. The catch? The audio the H2o delivers is admittedly subpar compared to the pill. With that being said, with its smaller size and friendliness with mother nature, it redefines the word "portable". You can take it rock climbing, white water rafting, wind surfing, you name it. I am an outdoorsy, adventurous person so its subpar audio can be overlooked. Moreover, they have several bigger sizes as well. The next two sizes up are also waterproof and can easily compete with Beats or even Bose audio (which are never waterproof) while being 20-30 USD cheaper.

Consider the fact that you have never even heard of the company Altec Lansing before I mentioned it. I hope I have at least triggered some curiosity about the brand and what it has to offer. This is just one prime example of what poor advertising and hasty designing can do for your products. At any rate, I own an Altec Lansing product and not a Beats product--and I have no regrets.

New Haircuts and good vibes

There's just something about a new haircut that makes you feel reborn again. You get the feeling that at least temporarily, you problems have spontaneously ceased to exist and that you are capable of accomplishing anything. Negative thoughts are replaced with a surplus of confidence and the drive to do something new and adventurous.

But why does a new haircut (the assumption being that you enjoy the way it looks) so easily channel positive vibes? Seeing the sun when you awake, the sign of another new day to learn and grow: shouldn't this be sufficient enough for us to grow in confidence and positive energy? Another day to live, regardless of your beliefs, is never promised and should always be "carpe-ed" (aka seized).

The next time you get a new haircut and you start experiencing sudden positive energy, remember this--every day you get up to breathe again should be more than enough to give you motivation to be the best you, and simply, to enjoy life.

2k

One of my favourite games to play for the console is NBA 2k. I've always been a big fan of basketball and just sports in general.

Commonly referrer to simply as "2k", this game is quite addicting. I enjoy playing the feature called "My career". You create your own player and play through his career from the rookie rising stars game which determines which team you end up with to a possible NBA championship you can win.

You make decisions through the way that affect the fan support you get as well as your team chemistry. You keep adding to your stats along the way, improving your player as you go.

If you like really fun sport simulation games, I highly recommend this. It is one of the few games I can play for hours and hours on end.

Daredevil's 2nd Season

A week or so ago Netflix released the second season in the new smash hit series Daredevil. Daredevil focuses on the corrupt city notoriously dubbed as "Hell's Kitchen", where lawyer Matthew Murdock adorns himself in red devil-outfit at night to administer justice.

Unlike other featured Marvel films like Arrow and The Flash, Daredevil packs a bigger punch (pun intended) with its more dark and mature themes and graphic violence. From people getting tortured with an electric drill to getting there faces smashed in car doors, the show is not for the faint of heart. Personally, I enjoy this aspect of the show; when anything goes, shows are much more entertaining to watch.

Charlie Cox does a superb job playing the lead role of Matt Murdock/Daredevil. In the newest season the kingpin is no longer the main focus. A new character emerges in the form of Jon Bernthal as The Punisher, another Marvel hero with a dark past. In contrast with Daredevil, The Punisher (alias Frank Castle) prefers killing his enemies as opposed to sending them to jail. He and Daredevil face off on more than one instance for this reason, although it is apparent at least to me that they have an unmentioned mutual respect for each other.

If you enjoy graphic stylized action violence, good story line, and mature themes, then I encourage you to watch the show, which is available on Netflix. Start with the first season though!

Solace Movie review

Solace is fast paced crime/mystery/drama starring welsh legend Anthony Hopkins and Irishman Colin Farrell that exceeds the movie database ratings I've seen for it.

The storyline focuses on an elderly clairvoyant man (Hopkins) who has been recruited to help the FBI track down a psychopathic serial killer who is far more than just a mere killer.

There are great entertaining action sequences coupled with mysterious plot twists that keep your eyes glued to the screen.

I'm starting to enjoy seeing Farrell more and more on the big screen and he does a superb job playing the role of the psychopathic serial killer. Hopkins, of course, is equally as enjoyable to watch.

While this storyline might be seen as somewhat recycled, this film definitely holds up against others like it.

If you like fast paced action and movies that make your brain fry then Solace is a film definitely worth your time.

Stogie Woes

I have the stogie woes, the 'gar blues. Cigar shops in the UK continue to disappoint me. Even more irritating is the deceitful, very misleading appearance they present, from the rustic looking cubans in the shiny humidors to the nicely dressed "knowledgeable" staff working behind the counter who pronounce the esteemed brand "Oliva", "Ah-liv-uh".

Upon first moving to the Britain both my father and I were beyond excited to have unrestricted legal access to cuban cigars. Most of you are aware of the embargo that the United States has with Cuba ever since the Bay of Pigs under the Kennedy administration. Statements have been made by the president on more than one occasion his intention to end this embargo. Well, as with other things, like shutting down Guantanamo Bay, the embargo has yet to be lifted.

Needless to say, my old man and I were quick to get our hands on a batch when we stepped foot in Union Jack land. We discovered a highly rated tobacconist in Oxford known as (much to our excitement) the "Havana House". As you enter the shop the first thing you notice is the fresh, bold scent of dark tobacco. For an avid cigar smoker like myself, the aroma is quite pleasant. The people working the counter are "Havana specialists", dressed typically in fine italian suits and dinner jackets, warmly offering their assistance, recommending the more expensive sticks when they can.

The cigar collection they boast is admittedly pretty well rounded. In addition to the highy regarded havana tobaaco, they offer a nice assortment of Nicaraguan and Dominican blends as well as popular American operated brands like "Oh-Leev-ah" (Oliva). They also have a nice variety or triple flamed table lighters, cigar cutters, humidors, and even hookah merchandise.

All of the cigars are very nice looking, with attractive visible veins, a nice aroma, and a smooth but rustic feel to the touch. Don't let the cigars' appearance deceive you however.

After purchasing the cigar (which are all typically 3 to 4 times more expensive than priced in the UK), it's quite tempting not to light up the attractive looking tobacco leaves as soon as you get home. It's best to not have high expectations.

Now, if you're new to the cigar world, odds are you won't know a bad cigar if it slapped you in the face. After the being in the game for about 5-6 years now, it's not hard for me to tell. All but one of the cigars that I have purchased in the United Kingdom have been bad, if not atrocious cigars. They have all either tunneled, have trouble staying lit, and just offer an overall bad experience (see my previous cigar post about how to get started the right way, and to find more information on tunneling). Not to mention my dad and my own disappointment to find that the Cuban blends we were so keen to try are actually worse than the other blends! It is very unlikely I will ever purchase another cigar here.

That being said, one shop in particular did offer a quite juxtaposed experience. The cigar shop in Stratford upon Avon, Shakespeare's home, is (in contrast with the whole of the UK it seems) quite nice. Unfortunately I have only ever purchased one stogie from that shop; it wasn't even cuban. It was an unlabeled nicely constructed medium-bodied cigar that the shop owner claimed to be an unmarked experimental cigar from Davidoff. I found this hard to believe because the stick cost only 8 quid (about 13 USD at the time of purchase; for those that are not familiar with Davidoff cigars, look it up. 13 bucks is a bargain if it ever was one).

While I did have to relight it once or twice, the constuction was on par with a stick produced by Davidoff. The flavours were all there and the draw was perfect. That being said, I doubt that I'll ever be in Stratford upon Avon anytime soon.

The Blade trilogy

My newest movie adventures have brought me to the Blade trilogy. If you enjoy stylised action violence and dark themes, then I highly recommend these movies.

Blade is a vampire/human hybrid who possesses all the strengths of a vampire without any of their weaknesses. He is a vampire slayer, seeking to eliminate any vampires who threaten to wipe out the human race. He is an expert martial artist who is also highly trained in firearms and sword fighting, thus giving him his nickname.

Wesley Snipes was perfectly cast for the role and is just a badass on the big screen. I find myself hoping now a 4th movie is made.

Most are unaware that Blade is actually a Marvel comic book character who first made his debut in the '80s. These movies were the first comic book featured films to receive an R rating.

If you ever find yourself bored and enjoy watching intense fight scenes, the Blade trilogy is definitely worth the watch.

Batman: The Animated Series

I love to watch so many different things spanning across virtually every genre. One thing that I really enjoy watching, as random as it may seem, are Batman cartoons/animated movies.

For being considered children's show, the animated Batman shows and movies are quite mature. They contain very dark and adult related themes. They often see their main characters asking important questions regarding ethics and morality.

Many times Batman is faced with a seemingly impossible situation against a foe of his. During several of those encounters Batman is faced with the option of killing his opponent. However, it is Batman (Bruce Wayne's) belief that killing his opponents would in turn make him just like the criminals he has sworn to fight against.

The criminals Batman faces are most often psychologically deranged and confused. They have been through certain traumatic events in their early lives that have led them to their current state.

Batman, the arsenal of justice, fights these criminals in unparalled style and precision. He is regarded as the best detective in the comic universe and is by far my favorite superhero.

I highly recommend checking out the animated series as well as the feature length animated movies he is featured in. They more recent movies are more adult oriented, hardly for children, and they always entertain.

I miss Mexican restaurants

One thing in particular about the UK irritates me. While there are burrito places here, I've yet to find a "proper" Mexican restaurant.

In the United States, Mexican restaurants are everywhere. The food is great and the prices are cheap. It always satisfies your hunger as well.

Normally when you are seated you are given corn chips with salsa, refilled as needed (complimentary with a food order). They always have a combo option that normally includes a main dish (chili relleno, burrito, enchiladas) accompanied with a couple side dishes (normally rice and refried beans).

While I absolutely love Italian, Thai and Chinese food (especially Chinese buffets) not one can satisfy my craving for some tasty Latino meat.

I love chili rellenos and burritos the most. I can eat quite a bit in one sitting for my size, so the fact that they normally serve bigger portions than other places is quite nice as well.

Granted, in all of the UK, I have yet to discover one like in the US that offers the same experience.

I will personally treat the first person that shows me where I can find a place like this with a nice Mexican meal.

Java by Drew Estate: Cigar Review

The other week I smoked a very nice stick, the Java by Drew Estate.

The initial appearance of the cigar is quite visually and physically appealing. It has nice veins and a rustic looking feel to it. It is very aromatic and smells of chocolate and coffee beans.

At first light the cigar is bursting with a sweet coffee flavour with notes of chocolate. It is medium bodied and the sweet flavours do not drown out the natural tobacco flavour.

It is a relatively fast burner and the draw comes fairly easily. The sweet dessert like flavours make it difficult not to smoke too quickly.

Up until the halfway burn point, the construction is seamless. The stick boasts a decent sized ash as well, with a good smoke output.

The last third of the cigar sees the natural, earthier tobacco flavours start to grow in strength and slightly overpower the sweetness.

I would give the cigar a solid 7/10. It is a great smoke for beginners as it is not too strong. I have no real legitimate complaints, although I think that I would have personally enjoyed it more if the tobacco flavours were stronger during the first two thirds of the smoke (although this is just personal preference; I like strong, full-bodied cigars. But I enjoy cigars of every shape, size, and flavour).

The Good Stuff

There are quite a bit things that I enjoy. I pride myself in being an individual of eclectic tastes. Every day I am discovering new things to add to my long list of likes and interests. The stuff that "sticks" with me I dub "the good stuff". One of my greatest fixations and hobbies are cigars.

There's nothing quite like a nice smoke paired with a great scotch-whiskey!

Cigars are not for the faint of heart as most are very heavy in strength in flavour. Unlike a standard fag, cigars are NOT meant to be inhaled. Rather, they are meant to be "puffed". They possess varying amounts of distinct tastes and flavours that are best enjoyed and experienced while puffing the cigar and letting the flavours permeate your palette.

Cigars come in several different sizes and shapes as well.

There are torpedoes, churchills, double corona, culebra, and many others. The more tightly the tobacco is packed, the longer it should take you to enjoy your cigar.

There is a cigar etiquette that must be followed if you are to be respected by other frequent cigar smokers. Most amateur stogie smokers tend to force the ash off of their cigar, as if it were a fag. This is wrong! Doing that is equitable to disrespecting the cigar's construction. If the ash is still lingering, it has not yet been fully smoked! It is best to leave it as is, and every so often hold it over the ash tray and give an ever-so-slight shake, or tap of the finger, and if the ash still remains, let it stay. Brag about  it to your mates! The longer the ash the better the construction. The picture underneath is an example of a perfectly constructed cigar.

Another big issue with first time cigar smokers is the proper way to light one up. A common misconception is that the standard zippo lighter should suffice. This is not quite true. Using a zippo lighter can burn the tobacco before it is actually smoked. In addition, zippo lighters are known to take away flavour from the cigar. The chemicals in the lighter fluid can permeate the tobacco and ruin the taste of the cigar at first light. The picture below is an example of tunnelling.

Better than the zippo lighter is a standard match. A match can take a bit of time to fully light a decent-sized cigar. If you do end up using a zippo or match, make sure never to  touch the actual cigar to the flame. Use the heat from the flame as opposed to the flame itself. Make sure the cigar is fully lit before you finish. Some quit when they finally start getting smoke of the draw. This isn't the brightest idea as the cigar may not be fully lit. In this case tunnelling might occur.

Tunnelling is when stick being smoked is not being fully burned. Burning occurs down the sides or in the middle, but not in the full circumference of the cigar.

The best way to light your cigar is by using a butane triple flame lighter. They are not the cheapest but they are the most effective. They are powerful and quick as well as wind resistant.

Above are examples of many different cigar cutters.

Cigar smoking is definitely an acquired taste and a hobby that should be researched and appreciated. Any more questions or thoughts? Leave some in the comment section below and I will answer as best I can!

Deadpool Movie review

First off, I have never been a big fan of Ryan Reynolds. He is an actor who exists mainly to satiate the fantasies of lustful women, what with his checkerboard abs, perfectly white smile, and those all-seeing eyes.

What I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt though, is that Deadpool lived up to the hype, in absolutely every way, shape, and form.

The movie begins in a slow motion action seen, as our "hero" is fighting off the "bad guys" in an SUV in middle of a spectacular barrel roll while classical music can be heard in the background.

The first third of the movie focuses on Deadpool's origin story and Wade Wilson, the man behind the mask. The story does just back and forth quite a bit during this time period, but it is seamless because the action, style, and humor remains consistent.

The whole film is rampant with hysterical dialogue and crude humor. The comic book character Deadpool is known not to have any filter on his words (which is both his greatest flaw and and his highest praise). Ryan Reynolds embodies this character with such brillance. I never took my eyes off him, every word that came out of his mouth was pure gold. Many many tears were shed at the theatre that night.

Another high point of the film is the stylized action violence reminiscent of renowned director Quentin Tarantino, although perhaps it may even exceed it. Because of his abnormal healing abilities, Deadpool fights very recklessly and without care or concern. Even while bullets pierce through him he can still be heard cracking a joke.

After watching the movie premier, I find it hard to envision the movie as rated anything less a 15. It would be impossible to make it into the success that is was without it. With that being said, it wasn't the first "hero" movie to see a rating like that. Before Deadpool there was the Blade trilogy, The Punisher, The Watchmen, and Dredd. all of which (with the exception of the Blade trilogy) I have seen, and they fall short of the standard that Deadpool has set.

Violence and humor aside, Deadpool also has a fairly decent storyline. He has set out to find and defeat the man/organisation that made him into what he was, and to save his ex-girlfriend. He finds himself conflicted when he encounters the X-men, debating his preferred methods,Viewers see an ever so slight glimmer of hope in his character, and that perhaps he truly is a "hero" (only to have the idea shot down by Deapool as he shoots down his enemies).

Deapool was my favorite movie in a long time, and I look forward to the sequel. Expect to see another film review for Batman vs. Superman in the near future (although the movie I anticipate the most is the new confirmed Bourne film with Matt Damon).

Leo comes out on top

After years and years of waiting, Leonardo DiCaprio has finally claimed his first Oscar for his role in the 2015 film The Renevant.

Personally, I've never been much of a big Leo fan, which is a bit odd considering how big of a film buff I am. My favorite film I have seen him in would have to be Gangs of New York, where he costarred with Daniel Day Lewis, the man, the myth, the legend. I felt that Leo may have been robbed of an Oscar there, although I did enjoy Lewis' role more.

Aside from that film, and The Departed, I've always thought Leo played the same playboy rich guy role (The Great Gatsby, Romeo and Juliet, The Wolf on Wall Street). Inception was a pleasant surprise. However, I hardly thought his role in that was Oscar worthy.

With that being said, a few mates of mine convinced me to do some digging. I recently watched What's eating Gilbert Grape, and The Aviator. I was blown away by his performance in both of those (Shutter Island was also a great film of his by the way). After watching those two films I looked at Leo as a different actor. I highly recommend watching those.

Furthermore, his latest role in The Renevant, was also mesmerizing to witness on the big screen. I look forward to seeing him in more films, and I'm sure I speak for everyone that has seen most of his films, that it is about he added one of those shiny metal men to his shelf.

26/02/2016

In spite of otm parties not really being my thing, I thought one more go at it would be a better alternative to spending my weekend alone.

So, just for fun, I'm documenting how the night unfolds. 2.5 hours in counting until the party starts, and I've downed two energy drinks already (caffeine as a substitute for alcohol, as I'm taking a break from drinking).

In recent news, I lost miserably 5 times in a row to Paul in pool. I swear that man has some sort of magnet hidden in his cue stick.

40 minutes... I think im gonna head downstairs. I've been charging my phone for the past 45 minutes in the student union, honing my pool skills on their crap table.... 84%; should suffice I guess.

2156: Just met a drunk Frenchman, bought me my first drink of the night: a red bull.

2209: Decided to have a smoke. Still dead at the otm right now.

A guy walked out with coffee for security. I went in to check if the machine was still on, and Paul tells me it's only for security.

Finished smoking my cigarillo, listened to a security guy talk about a drunk guy pissing out the window of the community minibus he was driving.

2233: Time for a J2O.

2245: I find Rog at the bar, get his take on my idea to record the night's events. He suggests I download periscope, which allows me to live stream everything taking place....hmmmm....I think he's on to something.

2258: The caffeine seems to be having the reverse effect. I'm feeling rather drowsy, the party hasn't even begun. "Oh, I think that I found myself a cheerleader"...

2312: Seriously considering a nap right now. " I wanna rock with somebody "...

2322: One red bull is not enough. Two sounds good.

2351: At the dance floor, waiting for the turning to happen.

0009: I reckon I've pissed about 12 times already. The turning has begun. Also, another cigarillo bekons me.

Turning....

Up...

0031: 66% on my phone battery.

0034: Turnt.

"Who run the world? Girls."...

Another red bull...

0100: TURNT.

0118: Another J2O. Another smoke.

0140: silento----> Trap queen

0200: We found love in a hopeless place.
TUUURRNNT.

0203: too turnt, need another smoke break.

0225: Took a detour upstairs to the pool table.

0250: Back to the dance floor.

0313: *Phew* My feet are aching, I'm tired, and I think I'm done for the night. Almost made it to 4.

But....I had loads of fun.

Peace out...

Elections

Since the late 18th century american citizens have taken part in presidential elections, choosing a candidate that they have deemed will be the best leader for the nation. Between George Washington and Barack Hussein Obama, 44 men have taken up the reigns as Commander in Chief of the United States of America. Becoming arguably the most powerful man in he world obviously doesn't happen over night. There is a lot of campaigning, debating, speaking, and "woo-ing" of american citizens. I find this whole election process to be quite comical and amusing. Whenever I think that it couldn't possibly get more hysterical, next year's election comes along to prove me wrong. One thing does however remain constant with each new election, and that is the format it follows.

The format is such: 1) Announce presidential candidacy and running mate (the assumption is that you have already chosen your sponsors and endorsements; it is common knowledge that campaigning is quite a costly affair, and normally the candidate with the deepest pockets will see the most success (the present election has a prime example in the form of Republican forerunner Donald Trump), 2) Decide which groups/organisations of people you will support (it's impossible to please everyone), 3) Create a plan you will offer to the people if elected, 4) Identify your opponents and their offers/plans/visions for America, 5) dig up all of your opponents' dirty secrets (can be unrelated to the election) that will make people question the moral character of the opposition and/or ability to lead the country, 5) engage in public debates with opponents, every time an opponent publicly castigates you, make sure you are smiling, making sure to keep your composure, and confidently wag a finger or hand as if to coolly dismiss the accusation (it is essential to have a quick rebuttal at the ready; simply saying he/she is wrong will not be sufficient and will subsequently convey your not-so-subtle ignorance), 6) select the locations you will visit to rally for support (be careful to choose one's your campaign will benefit from, and that won't put an unnecessary dent in your wallet), and lastly 7) because verbal abuse isn't enough by itself, make a video segment attacking your opponents' inadequacies to make yourself look better; put the video on the tele.

Of course there is more to it than this, but these are trends I have noticed without putting forth much effort.

What is very amusing to me are the debates between candidates. Reminiscent of kindergarten, full grown men and women strap on their toddler outfits and have a scuffle. "So-and-So's plan is so messed up! Don't trust his empty promises! As a senator so-and-so promised to do such-and-such but didn't!" to which Senator so-and-so then replies saying "Mr. what's-his-name's ignorance is mind-blowing. And just last year he raped three women! Thus he would be a terrible President"; Non-sequitur after non-sequitur, jargon and more jargon, in a vain attempt to give off the appearance of intelligence,

Even more hysterical to me are the third-party candidates running for nomination that people rarely hear about. Many even change their names, or right something ridiculous down at registration. Take this year for instance, when there was a candidate running under the name "deez nuts". A viral video was posted online recently local news channel discussing recent polls in North Carolina mention "Deez nuts" now as 9% of the votes in the state for the republican nominees. That stuff cracks me up.

Personally, I prefer not to vote. Every candidate has his/her share of skeletons in the closest, flaws that would be a detriment in leading a nation; there is no such thing as a perfect leader. Especially in regards to this year's election, I wouldn't be able to forgive myself for being responsible for putting anyone in office. Moreover, my vote is insignificant in deciding anything (to which one might say, "Hey, don't think like that! Imagine if everyone thought that way. Democracy would cease to exist!" to which I would then reply "Imagine if everyone didn't think that way. Oh wait, my bad, they don't.")

Nevertheless, at one point in the near future President Obama will step out of the office and someone else will be there to take up the torch. I'm going to close my eyes, say a prayer, and hope for the best--and stay in the U.K. for as long as humanly possible.

Stress Relievers

There are just days when each and every one of us are overcome by excess amounts of stress. Our minds become clouded with things we must tend to during our day, or during the week, as well as with personal problems we are dealing with. Stress is an inevitable part of life. Every one of us have our own ways of dealing with the stress we face.

As for me, I normally deal with stress in one of two ways (normally both). The first way I deal with stress I am dealing with is to get a nice, 45 minute-hour long workout in. A workout for me means I generally do 15-30 minutes of intense cardio, followed by 30-45 minutes of weightlifting and machines.

My goal is to exhaust my body, to bring on the pain (after all, no pain no gain, right?). Whatever has my mind preoccupied at the moment (which nowadays contains very sad notes), I actually tend to focus on as I work out. I think in general people try to forget what is bothering them. While this can be helpful, at some point in time whatever is bothering you must be addressed and dealt with, solved, and then subsequently forgotten about. I tend to focus on what is bothering me, and run on the treadmill or bike, pushing my heart rate to the red zone (180-200 beats per minute).

Then I walk to the weight room and repeat the process. Switching between different machines and weights, different exercises. I normally do 3-4 sets of 10 -12 or so reps, focusing on the range of motion in my muscles. The soreness is satisfying. I channel my thoughts on my problem, and lift until I experience what is known as "the pump" when the blood has pumped to and filled up your muscles that you are exercising, making them tight, and hard. The sensation is therapeutic for me. To an extent, what I do in the gym might be equated to an angry person wanting to take out their anger with a punching bag, as opposed to punching whomever has made them feel a certain way (Granted, I seldom think of punching people as I work out, but rather lifting away my worries, fears, and concerns, at least for short period of time).

The next way I deal with stress is to listen to music. Most often these days I enjoy listening to background acoustic music using the PC app called "Spotify". It relaxes me, and I work on class work as I listen, thinking about the problems stressing me out in the process. Listening to music is a common method for calming nerves, channeling positive energy, and working to resolve your problems.

Whatever the case my be, stressful situations will make you stronger when you reach the peak of the mountainous problem you find yourself facing. It is also essential to remember, always, that you can never control your circumstance; however, you can choose to face it with a positive attitude and a healthy mentality.

First, love yourself

Confessions of a depressed guy, day number whatever:

So, I'm at a party at the moment, its 1:46 in the morning. This is my 4th time out in 3 weeks. I'm as sober as they come at the moment, and I've been doing some serious thinking, as I sit here watching people dance, the strobe lights flickering all over the place.

Parties have never really been my thing. I'm far too self conscious to really enjoy myself.  Nevertheless, in my current state, I thought it best to get myself out there, try to meet new people, and have a good time. Needless to say, it hasn't done much for me.

It doesn't suit me. The dancing, grinding, drinking. I feel out of place. I'm too concerned with my self image. Too concerned with blending in, but feeling as if I'm always falling short of people's expectations.

The reality is--it's impossible to meet everyone's standards. You will always fall short of expectations. That's simply life in a nutshell.

In spite of that fact, you need to be comfortable with yourself. You need to love who you are, and be the best you that you can be. Don't change who you are to make please others. Life cannot possibly be enjoyed to the fullest unless you love who you are. And I should know, in my current state, that there will be people down the road who appreciate you, who want to spend time with you, be your friend.

Hold your head up, forget what others think, love yourself, and enjoy life in every moment.

Growing up

"You need to grow up!"

We've all heard it at more than one instance in our lives. Most often we've heard it from our parents, sometimes we might hear it from a friend or a teacher. Regardless, growing up is something we all must do eventually (provided you actually want to do something productive with your life).

But who is to say when a person has "grown up" or has become a "grown up"? There are things to be learned at any age and time in our lives, so in a sense, we never stop " growing up" (or, sadly, growing old for that matter). What is different for each of us is how fast we do our growig up. Each person is at a different stage of maturity, going through his/her own personal problems,  trying to make it through the next roadblock life has thrown at them. It is essential as inherently compassionate, and sentient beings to recognise that fact; if we ever want to helped through our troubles, we must try to help others with their own, if we ever hope to have a kind act reciprocated. This is just one of the many important lessons in growing up.

Some of the most important things we can learn growing up are learned alone. I am going through quite an important phase right now in my life, a phase where I have spent a lot of time alone, doing a lot of reflecting, a lot of learning, and a whole lot of growing up. Specifically, I've made made the critical realisation, that living your life to please other people slows down your personal growth tremendously. In the end, there will always be people that you can't please. There will always be expectations that you can't reach. There will always be standards that you will never measure up to; only you know your own limits. Growing up means yourl start realising who you are, the potential you have to do great things, and setting out to accomplish those things, not for the sake of others, but for your own. You must first love yourself, and be comfortable in who you are; only then can one really begin to grow up.

Even so, it is absolutely critical to be weary of the unknown challenges others are facing in their own stages of growing up. Be considerate, be kind, and listen to others. The golden rule still holds true. I promise you life is a lot more enjoyable when you start learning these things.

But enough for now. Do you have some growing up to do? Get to it then!

Life and Music

Driving 75 mph down the A43, speakers blaring an Oliver Heldens dance anthem, and I'm feeling like a total hotshot. I park my car in the student parking lot and put my headset on, turning up the volume to Drake's "Back to Back" as I make my way over to the uni gym to crank out a few sets. I finish up and head to the student bar after a quick shower to get some studying in. Changing the Spotify playlist to John Coltrane, I grab a coffee and get to work.

Katy Perry, Lorde, Ed Sheeran, Beyonce, Drake, and Calvin Harris: odds are you've heard of at least a few of these names on more than one occasion. These are just a few of today's artists that headline the music industry. Whether you're in the car cruising down the highway, studying for a big test, or pumping some iron in the gym, it's likely that you've listened at least one of the artists mentioned, or similar ones. Music is part of the majority of people's daily routines. It keeps us focused, sets the mood, and isolates us from other unwanted distractions. Most every individual uses music for a significant role that adds color to their lives in some personal, unique way.

I am a person who has always prided himself in his eclectic tastes and interests; the world of music is no exception. I enjoy every type of genre, and listen at least three different genres every single day. Music is a strong passion of mine that I have embraced during happy, sad, and other emotional times in my life. It brings me peace, gets me energized, and allows me to express myself when I'm feeling strongly about something. More specifically, I enjoy playing classical piano, bringing to life deceased musical genius that is still alive on paper, and can be enjoyed when subjectively interpreted by the individual.

What intrigues me the most is how a world divided by ideology can be united by something as common as a few strings of musical notes and lyrics. Music brings life to people's ears, enpassions them, fuels them, brings them together. Moreover, the fact that music seems to have been around since the start of recorded time, begs the question that musical desires and inclinations are innate to the human species. Have you ever taken the time to actually envision a world devoid of music? It's all but impossible. To an extent at least, the world would be lifeless. At the VERY least it would be exponentially more dull and uninteresting.

Every day music continues to evolve and expand, reaching more and more people on a daily basis. As long as the earth continues to spin, it's significance in people's lives will continue persist.
